Crossovers: the hardest metre of your driveway.
The crossover is not yours, it takes more load than any other paving on your block, and it is the first thing to fail on a cheap job. It is also the one piece the City of Greater Geraldton may pay half of. Here is how crossovers actually work here.
You do not own your crossover.
This surprises people every single time, so let us get it out of the way. The crossover is the strip of driveway between the kerb and your front property boundary, running across the verge. It is not on your land. It sits in the road reserve, which is City of Greater Geraldton land, and that means you cannot simply extend your driveway across it and call it done. The City has to approve the design before anyone builds, and it has to be built to their specification, not yours or ours.
There is a second layer to check as well. If your property fronts a road controlled by Main Roads WA rather than by the City, that authority has to be involved too, and the requirements are stiffer because you are dealing with a higher-order road. Most residential streets around Wandina, Mount Tarcoola and Glenfield are City roads and this never comes up. If you front a highway or a major distributor, it very much does, and it is worth establishing on day one rather than after the design is drawn.
The subsidy that most people never claim.
Here is a genuinely useful piece of Western Australian law that a surprising number of homeowners have never heard of. Under the Local Government (Uniform Local Provisions) Regulations 1996, where an owner constructs a crossing to the local government's specification, the local government contributes half the cost of a standard crossover.
Be clear-eyed about the limits, though, because we would rather you hear them from us than find out later. It is generally limited to a first crossover for a property, so a second driveway or a replacement of one you already have usually will not attract it. It applies to the cost of the standard specification, so if you build a premium clay brick crossover the contribution is calculated against the standard concrete one, not against your invoice. And it comes with conditions and a claim process that you have to follow, including having the work approved beforehand. The amounts and conditions are reviewed from time to time, so confirm the current position with the City of Greater Geraldton before you build it into your budget. What you should not do is skip the application and forfeit it by default, which is what happens most often.
Why the crossover gets built heavier than your driveway.
This is the engineering heart of it. Your crossover takes more punishment than any other square metre of paving on your property, and it takes it from three directions. Every vehicle entering or leaving crosses it, so it collects every movement the driveway behind it gets. It is where cars turn in off the road, so tyres scrub and pivot rather than roll straight, which is a completely different load. And it takes traffic your driveway never sees: the rubbish truck tracking its wheels across the verge, the delivery van, the removalist, the concrete truck when your neighbour builds.
So we build it heavier. A crossover gets a deeper compacted road-base sub-base than the driveway behind it, typically 150 to 200mm rather than 100 to 150mm, laid and compacted in proper lifts rather than one dump. AS 3727.1 covers residential pavements and the crossover sits at the demanding end of it. And it always, without exception, gets a concrete edge restraint and an apron at the kerb. On the sandy ground out at Tarcoola Beach and Drummond Cove it also gets a geotextile separation layer, or the base migrates down into the dune sand under all that load and the crossover dishes within a few years.
The kerb edge is where paved crossovers die.
Drive around Geraldton and you can spot failed paved crossovers from the car. The pavers near the gutter have crept forward and fanned out, the joints there are wide and full of weeds, and the whole leading edge looks like it is slowly pouring into the road. That is not a paver problem. That is a restraint problem, and it is entirely predictable.
Every time a car drives over the kerb line it pushes the pavers forward a fraction. Without a concrete apron or haunch locking that leading edge, those fractions add up over thousands of movements until the pavement unravels from the gutter inward. It is the same failure mode as the missing edge restraint we bang on about on the buyer's guide, just concentrated at the hardest-working line on the block. It costs $25 to $45 per linear metre to do properly and it is the difference between a crossover that lasts 30 years and one that needs relaying in eight.
Levels, gradients and the thing that scrapes your bumper.
A crossover has to do three things geometrically and they sometimes fight each other. It has to meet the kerb at the right level so water keeps running along the gutter rather than ponding or being diverted onto the verge. It has to transition from the road grade to your property grade without creating a hump that scrapes the underside of a low car, which is where the guidance in AS/NZS 2890.1 on access driveway grades and transitions earns its keep. And it has to fit around whatever is already in the verge.
That last one is not trivial. Verges here carry stormwater gully pits, power poles, street trees, and services. The City sets minimum offsets from those and from kerb returns near intersections, and it also sets crossover widths, generally in the 3 to 6 metre band for a residential property depending on the situation. Before anyone digs, services need locating properly, which is a free service and not a formality. Material: clay brick, and here is why.
If the City approves it, clay brick is our standing recommendation for a crossover, and this is the one place where we do not hedge. Clay brick is dense fired ceramic with the colour fired through the whole body, so it does not fade under the Geraldton UV, and critically it is hard enough to be indifferent to the tyre scrub at the turn-in point that will slowly round off the arrises of a softer material. A worked example: the standard suburban crossover.
Take a typical one. Four metres wide, five metres from kerb to boundary, so 20 square metres, in clay brick, on a City street. At $95 to $140 per square metre supplied and laid, that is $1,900 to $2,800. Add the concrete edge restraint and kerb apron at $25 to $45 per linear metre across the leading edge and both sides, call it $350 to $600. Add the City's application fee, and the deeper base spec a crossover needs.
Realistically you are around $2,400 to $3,600 before any subsidy. If your property qualifies for the WA half-cost contribution, it comes off the standard-specification portion, so it takes a useful bite out of that rather than halving your clay brick invoice. Done with the deep base and the concrete apron it will still be flat and tight in 30 years, which matters because it is the piece of paving every visitor drives over and every one of your tyres crosses twice a day. Can I have a brick paved crossover in Geraldton?
Usually yes, subject to the City of Greater Geraldton approving the design, and clay brick is genuinely the best material for the job. It is dense fired ceramic, it holds its colour through the whole body rather than in a face layer, and it shrugs off the tyre scrub at the turn-in point that will slowly round off softer materials. The catch is that a paved crossover is only as good as its restraint. The kerb edge needs a concrete apron or haunch, or the pavers migrate towards the gutter over the years, which is the classic failed paved crossover you can see all over town.
What does a paved crossover cost in Geraldton?
A typical residential crossover is around 3 to 4 metres wide by 4 to 6 metres from kerb to boundary, so call it 15 to 25 square metres. In clay brick at $95 to $140 per square metre supplied and laid you are looking at roughly $1,400 to $3,500, plus $25 to $45 per linear metre for the concrete edge restraint and kerb apron, plus the City's application fee. Add the deeper base a crossover needs. If the WA half-cost subsidy applies to your property, it comes off the standard-specification portion, not the premium finish.
