Which paver actually suits Geraldton?
For a normal Geraldton house on a normal block: 60mm concrete pavers on 100mm to 150mm of compacted crushed limestone base, stabilised jointing sand and a concrete edge haunch, at $90 to $115 per square metre laid. Within a kilometre of the surf, pay the extra and use exposure grade clay brick at $95 to $140. Everything below is why, and what the numbers on the pallet label actually mean.
The material matters less than the three numbers behind it.
People arrive at the showroom trying to choose between concrete, clay and limestone, and that is the last decision that should be made, not the first. The three numbers that decide whether your paving is still flat and tight in 2050 are the unit thickness, the compacted depth of the base underneath it, and whether the joints are stabilised. Get those right and every material on this page performs. Get them wrong and the prettiest limestone in the Mid West will be rocking under your tyres inside three summers.
Geraldton adds two conditions that most of the country does not have to design for at the same time. The first is the afternoon southerly that locals call the Geraldton Doctor, which blows hard and consistently through spring and summer and does two things to paving: it scours loose jointing sand straight out of the joints, and it carries salt inland. The second is the ground. Along the coastal strip through Tarcoola Beach, Sunset Beach, Drummond Cove and Glenfield you are usually building on loose calcareous dune sand with limestone caprock at unpredictable depth, while on the eastern side of town the profile turns to heavier loams and reactive clay pockets that move with the winter rain. One site wants separation and confinement, the other wants depth and drainage. A quote that does not mention which one you have has not looked.

What the grade on the pallet actually means.
Concrete and clay pavers sold in Australia are made to the masonry unit standard AS/NZS 4455.1 and tested by the methods in the AS/NZS 4456 series. That is where the real information lives, and any supplier worth dealing with will hand you a one page technical data sheet for the unit you are considering. Four things on that sheet decide whether it belongs on your block.
- Thickness. Forty millimetres is a pedestrian unit. Fifty millimetres is the minimum for a domestic driveway. Sixty millimetres is what we lay under anything that also parks a boat trailer, a caravan or a dual cab. Thickness is the single strongest predictor of whether a paver survives a point load on the day the bedding sand under one corner finally moves.
- Characteristic breaking load. This is the tested strength of the unit itself, quoted in kilonewtons. You do not need to memorise a target figure, you need to see that the number exists and that the supplier can produce it. A unit sold with no published breaking load is a unit nobody has tested.
- Salt attack resistance grade (clay units). Clay pavers and bricks are graded for durability in three broad bands: protected, general purpose and exposure. The Australian masonry code treats the strip within roughly one kilometre of a surf coast as a marine environment, which covers most of the western half of Geraldton. In that zone exposure grade is the correct specification, and general purpose units will start losing their arrises within a decade. This is the most commonly downgraded line item on a coastal quote.
- Slip resistance (AS 4586). Wet pendulum results are reported as a class from P0 to P5, and there is a separate barefoot ramp classification for wet areas. Around a pool, ask for the higher pendulum classes and a barefoot rating, not a salesperson saying it feels grippy. Polished or heavily sealed limestone is a genuine hazard at a pool edge in the wet.
The pavement itself is covered by AS 3727.1, the residential pavement standard, and that document is almost entirely about layers you will never see again once the job is finished: the depth and compaction of the sub-base, the 20mm to 30mm of screeded bedding sand, joint widths, edge restraint and falls. On a Geraldton driveway that translates to a minimum 100mm of compacted crushed limestone road base, and 150mm where the ground is soft dune sand or the vehicle is heavy. A paved surface also needs a fall of at least one in one hundred so water leaves it, and it needs to finish clear of the damp proof course at the base of your walls, which in practice means stepping down from the house rather than paving up to the brickwork. If a quote is silent on base depth, falls and edge restraint, it is not a quote for a pavement, it is a quote for a pile of pavers.

What Geraldton does to a cheap specification.
There is a version of a paving job that costs roughly 20 per cent less than the one we quote, looks identical on handover day, and is visibly failing by its third summer. It is worth naming the parts of it, because these are the parts a low quote quietly removes.
- Loose washed jointing sand instead of stabilised sand. This is the classic Geraldton failure. A plain sand joint has no binder in it, and the afternoon southerly, plus a leaf blower or a pressure washer, empties those joints faster than you would believe. Once the joints are empty the interlock is gone, each paver is a free block, and the bedding sand starts pumping out from underneath. Stabilised or polymeric jointing sand costs very little at build time and is standard on every coastal job we do.
- A 50mm or 75mm base instead of 100mm to 150mm. You cannot see base depth from the surface, which is exactly why it gets cut. On loose dune sand a thin base has nothing to spread the wheel load into, so the pavement dishes in the wheel tracks. Ask for the compacted depth in millimetres and the tonnage of road base to be written on the quote, then count the truck loads on the day.
- No geotextile over dune sand. A separation fabric between the sand subgrade and the road base stops the two mixing. Without it, fine sand migrates up into the base over a few wet winters and the base loses its structure. It adds $8 to $15 per square metre, so roughly $360 to $675 on a 45 square metre driveway.
- No concrete edge haunch. Segmental paving only works while it is confined. Without a haunch along the free edges the outer pavers walk outward a few millimetres a year, the joints open, and the failure spreads inward. At $25 to $45 per lineal metre it is the cheapest structural element on the job.
- General purpose clay units within a kilometre of the surf. They look perfect for years and then start fretting at the edges. Exposure grade costs a little more per square metre and removes the risk entirely.
- Unsealed limestone on the coast. Limestone is porous. Salt gets into the pores, crystallises, and pushes the surface apart from the inside. Sealed on completion and re-coated on schedule, the same stone is one of the best performing surfaces in town.

What "commercial grade" and "heavy duty" are worth.
Nothing, on their own. Neither phrase is defined in any Australian Standard, and there is no test a product either passes or fails to earn them. They usually mean the unit is thicker than the range beside it, which is genuinely useful, but the honest version of that claim is the number: 60mm rather than 40mm. The same goes for premium, architectural, engineered and trafficable. If a phrase is doing work in a quote, ask what number sits behind it. Four questions get you there quickly.
- What is the unit thickness in millimetres, and what is the published characteristic breaking load?
- For clay units, what is the salt attack resistance grade, and is it exposure grade?
- What is the AS 4586 wet pendulum class, and for a pool, the barefoot classification?
- What is the compacted base depth in millimetres, and what tonnage of road base does that come to on my area?
A supplier or contractor who answers all four without hesitating is telling you something about how they build. One who changes the subject to colour is telling you something too. When you should not re-pave at all.
We would rather tell you this now than after you have paid for anything. If your existing pavers are structurally sound and the problem is a dished section, a rocking patch or joints that have emptied out, you almost certainly do not need new paving. A lift and relay reuses your pavers and rebuilds the base under them at $45 to $80 per square metre, against $75 to $170 per square metre for a new pavement. On a 45 square metre driveway that is roughly $2,000 to $3,600 instead of $3,400 to $7,650, and the result is the same flat driveway. Two more honest limits. If the paving is only tired rather than moving, a re-sand and re-seal at $15 to $35 per square metre will buy you years, and our maintenance guide walks through how to tell the difference. And we do not do asphalt, spray seal or decorative concrete resurfacing. If one of those is the right answer for your block we will say so and you should get that trade to price it, because a paving contractor quoting outside his own trade is how people end up with a surface nobody will warrant.
For the typical Geraldton house the recommendation is unglamorous and it has not changed in years: 60mm concrete pavers in a mid tone that hides Mid West dust, laid on 100mm of compacted crushed limestone base on the eastern side of town or 150mm with geotextile on the coastal sand, herringbone through the wheel tracks, stabilised jointing sand, and a concrete haunch on every free edge. That lands between $90 and $115 per square metre, or roughly $4,050 to $5,175 on a 45 square metre double driveway, and it is the build we expect to still be flat and tight in 30 years. Spend any upgrade money on exposure grade clay if you are near the water and want the colour to outlive you, not on a thinner paver in a nicer shade.
