Limestone or clay brick?
The two premium paving materials in Geraldton, and the answer is genuinely "it depends on where your feet are". Limestone owns anywhere bare feet go. Clay brick owns anywhere tyres go. Here is the honest comparison on heat, grip, salt, lifespan and 2026 price.

We get asked to settle this argument two or three times a week, usually between a couple who have already been to the display yard and disagreed. The frustrating, honest answer is that both are excellent and they are excellent at different jobs. The mistake is not picking the "wrong" one. The mistake is picking one and forcing it across the entire block when the driveway and the pool surround are two completely different engineering problems.
Heat underfoot, and why this decides pool surrounds.
Geraldton summers run hot and dry from October to April, with a long run of days between 35 and 40 degrees and a UV index that peaks around 12 to 14. That makes surface temperature the most practical difference between these two materials, and it is not a subtle one. Pale limestone reflects a large share of the solar radiation that a dark clay or charcoal paver absorbs, so on a 38 degree February afternoon the difference underfoot is the difference between walking to the pool and hopping to it.
To be fair to clay: colour matters more than material here. A pale, buff-toned clay paver narrows the gap considerably, and a charcoal one widens it into a genuine problem. But limestone's naturally pale tone combined with its slightly porous, textured face means it is consistently the coolest thing we lay in this town. That is why it dominates pool surrounds and rear alfrescos across Wandina and the newer estates, and it is a practical decision rather than an aesthetic one.
Wet grip, and the standard nobody mentions.
Anywhere wet feet meet a hard surface, slip resistance is a real specification, not a vibe. AS/NZS 4586 sets out how pedestrian surfaces are classified for slip, and a pool surround should be specified against it rather than chosen off a photo. Limestone's natural, slightly open texture gives it genuinely good wet grip straight out of the box. Clay brick varies enormously: a tumbled or textured clay paver is fine, while a smooth-faced one can be slick with wet feet on it. If you are set on clay around a pool, ask for the slip classification in writing.
Hardness, and why driveways flip the answer.
Now put a car on it and everything reverses. Clay brick is fired ceramic, extremely dense and extremely hard. Limestone is a soft sedimentary stone. Under a tyre that turns and scrubs on the same spot every single day, especially the pivot point where you swing into the garage, limestone will eventually chip and round off at the arrises, the sharp top edges of each unit. It does not fail structurally, it just starts to look worn where the wheels track while the rest still looks new. Clay brick is essentially indifferent to it.
That is why our standing recommendation for driveway paving is clay brick if the budget allows and concrete pavers if it does not, with limestone kept for the areas people walk on. Plenty of Geraldton homes run clay brick out the front and limestone out the back, and it reads as a deliberate design choice rather than a compromise, because it is one.
Salt and the coast.
Both materials survive Geraldton's coast, and the way they do it is different. Clay brick barely absorbs water at all, so there is very little for airborne salt to get into, and it needs no sealing to achieve that. It is the genuinely low-maintenance coastal choice. See brick paving.
Limestone is porous, and near the surf at Tarcoola Beach, Drummond Cove and Glenfield that porosity is its weak point. Salt soaks in, crystallises as the moisture evaporates in the sun, and the crystals gradually wedge the stone apart from the inside. That is what makes unsealed coastal limestone fret and go powdery at the edges. Sealed on completion and re-coated every two to three years within a kilometre of the water, it is fine and it looks superb. Unsealed, it is a slow-motion mistake. Lifespan, colour and price.
- Clay brick: 40 years plus. Colour is fired through the whole body, so it does not fade under our UV. No sealing needed. $95 to $140 per square metre supplied and laid.
- Reconstituted limestone: 20 to 30 years, sealed and re-coated. Uniform, pale, cool. $110 to $150 per square metre.
- Natural Geraldton limestone: 20 to 30 years, sealed and re-coated. Genuine local stone with real character and variation, more cutting waste. $130 to $170 per square metre.
- Standard concrete pavers, for reference: 25 to 30 years. The pigmented face layer softens over 10 to 15 years under Geraldton UV. $75 to $110 per square metre, and still the value choice for a plain driveway.
So limestone carries roughly a 15 to 25 percent premium over clay at build time, and then adds a re-seal every few years. Clay costs more than concrete up front and then asks for nothing but full joints for four decades. There is no free option in there, just different shapes of spend. A worked example: driveway plus pool surround.
Take a typical Wandina job: a 45 square metre double driveway and a 30 square metre pool surround with 18 linear metres of coping. Do the whole block in natural limestone and you are at $130 to $170 per square metre across 75 square metres, so $9,750 to $12,750, plus $1,600 to $2,900 for coping. Beautiful, and the driveway will be showing wheel-track wear at the garage pivot well before the alfresco needs anything.
Split it instead. Clay brick driveway at $95 to $140 per square metre over 45 square metres is $4,300 to $6,300. Limestone pool surround at $110 to $170 per square metre over 30 square metres is $3,300 to $5,100, plus the same coping. Total $9,200 to $14,300, so broadly the same money, but now every square metre is doing the job it is actually good at, and the driveway will still look sharp in 30 years. That is the recommendation nine times out of ten.
The thing that matters more than either.
One last honest note, because it undercuts this entire page. The material is the least important decision you will make. A limestone pavement on a properly compacted base with restrained edges and stabilised joints will outlive a clay brick pavement on 50mm of loose sand by decades. Every failure we are called to is a base failure or a joint failure, not a paver failure. Pick whichever of these you like the look of, then spend your attention on what is underneath it. Limestone is not fragile, it just has a maintenance contract attached and clay brick essentially does not.

Which is better around a salt pool, limestone or brick?
Sealed limestone, for two reasons that have nothing to do with salt. It stays cool enough to stand on with bare wet feet in a Geraldton summer, and its natural texture gives good wet grip, which matters because pool surrounds should be specified against the slip classifications in AS/NZS 4586. On pure salt resistance clay brick actually edges it, because clay barely absorbs anything, but a clay surround that is too hot to walk on in January is a surround nobody uses. Seal the limestone, rinse the splash-out occasionally, and it wins on the thing you will actually notice.
