Retaining wall failing in Geraldton: what to do in the first hour.
Clear people off the ground above the wall and out of the strip below it, and keep cars, trailers and the caravan off both. Turn off any reticulation station, pool backwash line or downpipe that discharges behind the wall, because water in the backfill is what is pushing it over. Throw a tarp over exposed soil and weight the edges so tonight’s rain cannot load it further. Do not dig at the toe, do not stack anything on the terrace above, and do not try to prop it with timber. Then photograph the face, the crack widths and the ground behind, and hold a level against the top to measure the lean before anyone touches it.

Most of what gets described to us as an emergency is not one, and a couple of things that get described as “a bit of movement” genuinely are. What makes it worse in the next 24 hours.
A retaining wall does not fail because of the soil it holds. It fails because of the water in that soil. Dry sand behind a wall pushes with a fairly modest force. Saturate the same sand and you add both weight and hydrostatic pressure, and the load on the wall can roughly double. That is why almost every wall we are called to in Geraldton goes in the first week of a decent winter front, not in February.
So the single highest-value thing you can do tonight is stop water getting behind it. Switch off the reticulation stations that water the garden bed above the wall. Check whether a downpipe, a soakwell overflow or the pool backwash line discharges anywhere within about three metres of the back of the wall, and divert it if it does. If the garden bed above has been mulched heavily against the wall, pull the mulch back from the top course so water can run away from the wall rather than sit against it.
The second thing is load. Every extra kilogram on the ground behind a wall is what engineers call a surcharge, and walls that were never designed for one fail fast when they get one. Move the trailer, the boat, the pallet of pavers and the car off the terrace above. If a driveway sits above the wall, stop using it and park on the verge. Damp sand runs about 1.8 tonnes per cubic metre, so a car parked one metre behind a wall is a serious addition to what that wall was asked to do.
Third, do not dig. The most common way a homeowner turns a leaning wall into a collapsed wall is by excavating at the toe to “see what is going on”. The toe is the part resisting the whole thing. Taking 200mm of soil out from in front of a leaning wall is how it comes down on the person holding the shovel.
Safe to do yourself, and genuinely dangerous.
Safe, and worth doing before anyone arrives
- Isolating water: reticulation off, downpipes diverted, pool backwash stopped.
- Tarping the exposed soil above the wall and weighting the edges with bricks, not stakes driven into the backfill.
- Barricading with witches hats, star pickets and bunting, or a temporary mesh panel, on both sides. Both sides matters: people watch the wall from the low side, which is exactly where it lands.
- Photographs. Wide shots of the whole wall, then close-ups with a tape measure in frame across every crack, then a shot of the ground behind and the drainage outlet if you can find one.
- A level held vertically against the wall face at three or four points along it, photographed each time. That gives us and any insurer a measured lean rather than an opinion.
- Sweeping loose material and marking a sunken paving void with a cone so nobody drives over it.
Genuinely dangerous, do not attempt
- Propping from the low side with timber. You are standing in the collapse zone, and a prop that slips accelerates the failure.
- Excavating at the toe, or removing blocks “to relieve the pressure”. Removing blocks relieves nothing and removes the wall.
- Working above a wall that is already leaning, including trying to dig the wet soil out from behind it by hand.
- Anything near a wall that supports a pool shell, a shed slab or a neighbouring boundary. Those are engineering problems from the first minute.
- Cutting or coring a wall to add drainage while it is under load.
If a wall has already dropped or a section has let go and there is any chance of a structure, a pool or a person being in the path of the rest of it, treat it as a structure emergency, keep everyone well back and contact emergency services on triple zero rather than a paving contractor.

After-hours call-out versus waiting for Monday: the real numbers.
An after-hours or weekend attendance in Geraldton carries a call-out fee of about $180 to $350 before anyone picks up a tool, and labour after hours typically runs $95 to $140 an hour against $75 to $95 in normal time. A genuine make-safe visit, meaning barricading, tarping, temporary support and clearing the danger, generally lands between $600 and $1,800 all up. None of that money buys you any permanent repair. It buys you the ability to sleep and to keep people away from the wall.
A weekday assessment, by contrast, costs nothing here. The measure and the written quote are free, and if the honest answer is that your wall has been sitting at that same lean since it was built and needs monitoring rather than money, that is what you will be told. Compare those two numbers before you decide. If nobody can be hurt, no vehicle can fall into it and no structure depends on it, waiting until the next working day saves you several hundred dollars and changes nothing about the outcome.
Where paying the after-hours fee is clearly worth it: a wall retaining a driveway that the household needs to use, a wall next to a pool barrier, a wall on a boundary where the other side is a neighbour’s living area, a void under a driveway where the bin truck or a delivery van is due, or any failure where children or pets cannot reliably be kept out. In those cases the make-safe is cheap next to the alternative.
When it is not an emergency, and waiting saves real money.
This is the part most trade websites leave out. The majority of paving faults in Geraldton are slow, boring and cheap to fix if you leave them alone until the right week. Empty joints, weeds, a slightly sunken paver, faded limestone, a stained driveway and a bit of surface spalling are all maintenance, not emergencies. Chasing them in the middle of a wet July costs more, because the base cannot be compacted properly in saturated ground and the job either waits or gets done badly.

One honest note about what this business does and does not do. There is no twenty-four hour crew here. Enquiries are answered Monday to Saturday and urgent make-safe work is scheduled as early as the next working morning wherever it can be done safely. If a wall is actively moving at ten at night, the right first response is barricades and distance, not a contractor. We also do not undertake repairs to a wall that is holding up a habitable structure or a pool shell without an engineer’s assessment first, because that work needs a design, not a quote.
Why Geraldton walls and pavements fail when they do.
Three local conditions do nearly all the damage. The first is water arriving in concentrated bursts. Geraldton gets around 440mm of rain a year and most of it lands between May and August, so a wall and its drainage sit dry and untested for eight months and then take the whole year in a handful of fronts. Anything marginal shows up in that window. Ex-tropical cyclone Seroja, which crossed the coast near Kalbarri in April 2021, is the reminder that this coast also gets loads well outside a normal winter front.
The second is the ground itself. Out at Tarcoola Beach, Drummond Cove and Glenfield you are working in deep, loose calcareous dune sand that carries load poorly and migrates readily once water moves through it. Further inland around Mount Tarcoola and Wandina there is more reactive clay in the profile, which moves seasonally and cracks rigid work. The two failure patterns look different: sand gives you washouts and voids, clay gives you heave, stepping and diagonal cracks.
The third is the wind. The strong afternoon south-westerly that Geraldton lives with for most of the summer scours loose jointing sand out of pavement joints season after season, and once the joints are empty the interlock that makes segmental paving work is gone. Before any rebuild starts, check whether it needs approval.
