Pave a Geraldton driveway from $3,400

A 45 square metre double driveway in plain 50mm grey concrete pavers on a properly compacted 100mm base costs $3,400 to $4,300 in 2026. The mid tier most people should buy is $4,500 to $6,300. Premium clay or natural limestone runs $6,800 to $9,500. Below is exactly what you give up at each step down, and the four savings that cost you the whole driveway.

Straight answer

Cheap is a scope decision, not a price decision.

Two quotes for the same Geraldton driveway can be $2,000 apart and both be honest. What separates them is almost never the hourly rate, it is what is in the hole. Base depth, spoil disposal, edge restraint and jointing sand are invisible from the footpath and account for most of the gap. So the useful question is not who is cheapest, it is which line items you are prepared to drop and which ones will cost you the whole pavement in five years.

One practical note before the tiers. Paving has a mobilisation floor. Getting a machine, a crew, a compactor and truck deliveries onto your block in Geraldton costs roughly the same whether the area is 12 square metres or 30, so most jobs under about 20 square metres land near a practical minimum of $2,000 to $2,500 regardless of the per square metre rate. If you have a small area, the cheapest move is to bundle it with something else on the same visit.

Three tiers, priced on a 45 square metre double driveway.

Real 2026 Geraldton figures, supplied and laid, including excavation, compacted base, bedding sand, laying, cutting, edge restraint and stabilised jointing. GST inclusive.

Tier Price for 45 m² Rate What you get What you give up Who should pick it
Budget $3,400 - $4,300 $75 - $95 per m² 50mm plain grey concrete pavers in a stocked colour, straight stretcher bond, 100mm compacted crushed limestone base, 30mm screeded bedding sand, stabilised jointing sand, concrete haunch on every free edge, correct falls. Colour and pattern choice, the 60mm unit, geotextile, sealing, feature borders. You clear the area and cart the spoil yourself, and you take a slot when one comes up. Bare ground or a new build pad east of the highway, rentals, and owners who want a driveway that lasts rather than a driveway that photographs.
Mid (our recommendation) $4,500 - $6,300 $100 - $140 per m² 60mm concrete or clay pavers in a chosen colour, herringbone through the wheel tracks, 150mm base where the ground calls for it, geotextile over dune sand, old surface removed and disposed of, stabilised jointing, haunch, falls set to a soakwell or existing drainage. Natural stone looks, sealing, contrast banding. Roughly $1,100 to $2,000 more than the budget tier. Most Geraldton houses. If you read one row, read this one. It is the build we expect to still be flat in 30 years.
Premium $6,800 - $9,500 $150 - $210 per m² Exposure grade clay brick or natural Geraldton limestone, sealed on completion, contrast border and banding, 150mm base with geotextile, drainage grate tied into a soakwell, full site works and reinstatement of turf and irrigation. About $2,300 to $3,200 more than the mid tier, and a longer lead time if the unit is not stocked locally. Coastal blocks inside a kilometre of the surf, houses being presented for sale, pool surrounds and entries where bare feet and looks both matter.

Scale roughly with area: a 20 square metre courtyard is not half the price of a 45 square metre driveway, because mobilisation and delivery do not halve. Use the quantity estimator to size your own job first.

Safe savings

Where you can genuinely take money out.

Every one of these reduces the invoice without reducing how long the pavement lasts. They are the savings we suggest ourselves when someone tells us their number.

  1. Stage the work, but lay the conduits now. Driveway this year, alfresco next year is a sensible split. The one thing you must not defer is anything that goes under the paving: run a 100mm conduit sleeve across the driveway for future power, irrigation or a pool line while the trench is open. It costs $30 to $80 in materials on the day and saves well over $1,000 in cutting and reinstatement later.
  2. Do your own demolition and cartage. Removing an old surface is $30 to $70 per square metre, so on a 45 square metre driveway you are pulling $1,350 to $3,150 out of the quote. Budget $80 to $150 a day for a trailer or a bin plus the per tonne gate fee at the city Meru waste facility, and expect 8 to 12 tonnes of spoil. Hard work, real money.
  3. Take a stocked size and colour. Geraldton is around 420 kilometres from Perth, and freight on a special order pallet adds $200 to $600 plus a lead time you cannot control. Choosing from what the local yard actually holds is often the single biggest saving on a small job.
  4. Straight bond instead of 45 degree herringbone. Fewer cuts, about 5 per cent wastage instead of 10, and less labour: roughly $5 to $12 per square metre. The honest trade-off is that herringbone interlocks better under braking and turning, so the compromise we usually suggest is stretcher bond for the field and herringbone through the wheel tracks.
  5. Book off-peak. The diary tightens from September to December as everyone tries to be finished before summer. Geraldton only gets around 440mm to 470mm of rain a year and it arrives in short winter bursts, so June to August work is entirely practical here. Ask what a mid-winter slot is worth: 5 to 10 per cent is common. Our timing guide goes through the trade-offs season by season.
  6. Go in with a neighbour. One mobilisation, one set of deliveries, one machine hire across two driveways in the same street is worth 5 to 10 per cent to both of you, and the trucks only block the road once.
  7. Relay instead of replace. If your pavers are sound and only the base has failed, a lift and relay is $45 to $80 per square metre against $75 to $170 for new. That is the single largest saving available to most people who ring us, and we will tell you when it applies.

One saving we do not recommend: supplying your own pavers. You lose the trade price, the contractor cannot warrant a unit he did not select, and any shortfall or breakage becomes your problem to chase and your delay to absorb. The trade discount is usually larger than the retail saving you think you are making. If you want to see where the line between owner work and contractor work sits, our DIY versus professional page is blunt about it.

False economy

The four savings you pay for twice.

These are not opinions. They are the four things we find under every failed Geraldton driveway we lift, and every one of them was a line someone removed to win a job on price.

  • Base depth. Saving 50mm of compacted road base on 45 square metres saves about $400 in material and machine time. Rebuilding that base under a dished driveway later costs $2,000 to $3,600 as a lift and relay. That is the arithmetic of the whole trade in one line.
  • Edge restraint. A concrete haunch on the free edges is $25 to $45 per lineal metre, so around $450 to $800 on a typical driveway. Without it the outer pavers creep, joints open, sand escapes, and the failure works inwards from the edge until the whole field is loose.
  • Jointing sand. Loose washed sand is a false saving anywhere in Geraldton and a guaranteed failure within a kilometre of the water. The Geraldton Doctor empties open joints in a season or two. Stabilised jointing is standard on everything we lay for that reason, and re-sanding later costs $15 to $35 per square metre every time.
  • The engineer and the permit on a retaining wall. Retaining over 500mm in Western Australia generally needs a building permit from the City of Greater Geraldton, and design and permit costs run $800 to $2,200. Skipping it saves that much once and then reappears at sale, at insurance claim time, or when the wall leans. Our retaining wall permit page sets out where the thresholds sit.

A fifth, less obvious one: paving over a failed surface instead of removing it. It looks like a saving of $30 to $70 per square metre and it is really a decision to build a new pavement on a base you already know does not work.

Reading a low quote

What the cheapest quote is usually leaving out.

Put the quotes side by side and check for these nine items. If a quote is silent on any of them, that is not a saving, it is a question you have not asked yet.

  • Compacted base depth in millimetres and the tonnage of crushed limestone road base.
  • Who removes the existing surface and who pays the per tonne tip fee at Meru.
  • Concrete edge haunch on the free edges, priced per lineal metre.
  • Jointing type: stabilised or polymeric, not loose washed sand.
  • Cutting and wastage allowance, which is 5 per cent straight and 10 per cent on 45 degree work.
  • Geotextile separation where the subgrade is loose sand.
  • Crossover permit and City of Greater Geraldton inspection if the work touches the verge.
  • Reinstatement of turf, garden edging and irrigation the machine will damage.
  • Whether the total is GST inclusive.

A quote that is 20 to 25 per cent under the others on the same measured area is a different scope, not a better deal. The fair test is to send every contractor the same written scope and ask them to price that, which is exactly what our contractor selection guide walks through.

WA money rules

Rebates, deposits and the crossover contribution.

Start with the honest part: there is no Western Australian rebate, grant or concession for paving a driveway. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. There are, however, four money rules specific to this state that genuinely change the arithmetic.

  1. The crossover contribution. Under the state regulations covering local government works, a WA local government contributes towards the cost of constructing a crossing between a public road and private land, in practice about half the cost of that council standard crossover. It is capped at their standard crossing, so a wide decorative crossover is on you, and it is not automatic: you apply to the City of Greater Geraldton first and build to their specification. Doing it in the wrong order forfeits the contribution and can mean rebuilding. Details on our crossover paving page.
  2. Deposit limits. The Home Building Contracts Act 1991 in WA caps the deposit on home building work at 6.5 per cent of the contract price. Even where a standalone paving contract falls outside that Act, 6.5 per cent is the benchmark to hold to. On a $6,000 job, that is $390.
  3. Rental properties. Paving at an investment property is normally a capital works deduction rather than an immediate expense, claimed at 2.5 per cent a year over 40 years. A $6,000 driveway is roughly $150 a year against your rental income. Your accountant should confirm it, but it changes how a landlord should think about tier two versus tier three.
  4. Door knockers. Regional WA gets a steady run of unsolicited offers to seal or resurface a driveway with material supposedly left over from a job down the road. Under Australian Consumer Law an unsolicited consumer agreement carries a 10 business day cooling off period, and for agreements over $500 the trader must not accept payment during it. If someone at your door wants cash today, that alone tells you what you need to know.
Honest constraint

Sometimes the right answer is not paving.

If what you actually need is a hardstand rather than a feature, do not pave it. A boat or caravan pad behind the side gate works perfectly well as 150mm of compacted crushed limestone at $25 to $45 per square metre, which is about a fifth of the price, and the base you build now is the base you pave on top of in five years. We will build that for you and say so on the quote.

If you are selling inside 12 months, spend the money on presentation instead. A clean, re-sand and re-seal at $15 to $35 per square metre on an existing driveway usually shows better per dollar to a buyer than a new pavement, and it takes a day rather than a week. And if the paving is only tired rather than moving, our maintenance guide will get you a few more years for a few hundred dollars.

The one place we will not help you save is the base, the edges and the joints. If your budget only reaches a driveway built without those, we would rather quote you a smaller paved area done properly, with crushed limestone on the rest, and come back for stage two when you are ready. A half-sized driveway that lasts 30 years beats a full-sized one that needs lifting in five.

Budget questions we get asked.

What is the cheapest way to pave a driveway in Geraldton?
Fifty millimetre plain grey concrete pavers on a 100mm compacted crushed limestone base, laid straight stretcher bond, at $75 to $95 per square metre supplied and laid. On a 45 square metre double driveway that is $3,400 to $4,300. Clearing the area and carting the old surface away yourself takes more off again, because removal on its own runs $30 to $70 per square metre.
How much cheaper is it to remove the old driveway myself?
Removal is $30 to $70 per square metre, so on a 45 square metre driveway you are taking $1,350 to $3,150 of labour out of the quote. Against that, budget $80 to $150 a day for a trailer or a bin plus the per tonne gate fee at the Meru waste facility, and expect 8 to 12 tonnes of spoil off a driveway that size. It is genuinely worth doing if you have a weekend and a strong back.
What does a suspiciously cheap paving quote leave out?
Usually the base depth, the spoil disposal, the edge haunch and the jointing type. If one quote sits more than 20 to 25 per cent below the others on the same area, it is almost never a better price, it is a different scope. Ask every quote to state the compacted base depth in millimetres, the tonnes of road base, who removes the spoil, and whether the figure includes GST.
Is there a WA rebate or grant for driveway paving?
There is no Western Australian rebate for paving itself. The one real contribution is the crossover, where local governments in WA contribute towards constructing a crossing between the road and your property, normally half the cost of that council standard crossover, and only if you apply first and build to their specification. For a rental property the paving is usually a capital works deduction at 2.5 per cent a year over 40 years, so a $6,000 driveway is around $150 a year. Confirm both with the City of Greater Geraldton and your accountant.
How big a deposit should I pay for paving in Geraldton?
The Western Australian Home Building Contracts Act caps the deposit on home building work at 6.5 per cent of the contract price, and that is the right benchmark to hold to even where a standalone paving contract sits outside the Act. On a $6,000 job, 6.5 per cent is $390. Nobody should be asking for the full amount before the first load of road base arrives.
When is cheap paving actually the right call?
When the surface is a hardstand rather than a feature. A boat or caravan pad behind the gate works perfectly well as 150mm of compacted crushed limestone at $25 to $45 per square metre, which is about a fifth of the price of paving, and you can pave over that same base later. If you are selling within 12 months, a clean, re-sand and re-seal at $15 to $35 per square metre usually presents better per dollar than a whole new pavement.
